In memoriam: Farewell, Scotty

James Montgomery Doohan died today in his home in the state of Washington. He was 85. Doohan is most well known as Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery Scott, Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise in 1967's science fiction series "Star Trek" and subsequent movie series.

The subject of probably the most often misquoted saying in all of television, "beam me up, Scotty" ( which was not actually said in the original series), Scotty was the engineer who could fix anything Captain Kirk asked him to.

Not many people know that the Scottish brogue that made Scotty famous was just one of the accents Doohan used during his try out. Doohan was very good at voice and provided some of the miscellaneous voices on the series like the voice of the computer. Doohan also created a basic Kilingon language used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture that was later expanded for use in the many spin-offs.

We will miss you, Scotty. (yes I am a trekkie)

Quick Trivia: Doohan lost the middle finger on his right hand on D-Day as a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery.
