Did You Know: The Great Escape

In the movie, The Great Escape, during the climatic motorcycle chase, John Sturges allowed Steve McQueen to ride (in disguise) as one of the pursuing German soldiers, so that in the final sequence, though the magic of editing, he's actually chasing himself.

Several cast members were actual P.O.W.s during World War II. Donald Pleasence was held in a German camp, Hannes Messemer in a Russian camp and Til Kiwe and Hans Reiser were prisoners of the Americans.

Crazy! Did the P.O.W.s play the pursuing Germans or did they play P.O.W.s in the movie?

Donald Pleasence played the Forger, Lt. Blythe, Hannes Messemer played the prison commandant Col. von Luger, Til Kiwe played Frink, and Hans Reiser played Herr Kuhn. So only Donald Pleasence played a prisoner.
