DVD Review: Dangerous Liaisons

The Movie: Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillipe) and Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) are step-siblings that revel in manipulating everyone around them. They enter into a bet that Sebastian can not woe Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the virginal daughter of the new headmaster. The terms: Sabastian fails in his attempt at Annette and Kathryn gets his 1956 Jaguar Roadster - Sebastian succeeds in bedding young Annette and he will get the one person he cannot have - Kathryn. But Sebastian never thought he would actually fall in love with Annette. When he finally realized he was in love with her, he would risk anything, even his reputation. The bittersweet ending is perfectly punctuated by the Bittersweet Symphony.

The DVD: The DVD is nice and simple. There is a behind the scenes featurette, a behind the visual style of the movie featurette, two music videos, deleted scenes and commentary.

The Experience: This movie is very rich in texture. It is a modern day period piece. The characters have a definite luxury to them. The sets are lush. It is a beautifully visual feast.

The Aftermath:This is a remake of Dangerous Liaisons (1988), which starred Glen Close, Michelle Pfeiffer, and John Malkovich.

The Score: 7 out of ten affairs
