Woohoo, I believe I know this one except for the years.
A is A Beautiful Mind where Ed plays an imaginated character.
B is The Abyss (one of my favorite movies)where Ed meets aliens and breaths liquid oxygen.
The Abyss was made first and I'm guessing in 1993, then A Beuatiful Mind and also a guess of 2003.

Missed it by that much! You got the movies but your guesses were off a little. in A Beautiful Mind(2001) Ed plays Parcher an imaginary character from Russell Crowe's mind. In The Abyss(1989) Ed plays Virgil "Bud" Brigman, the leader of a deep ocean platform that agees to help the Navy salvage a nuclear sub but gets cut off from the surface but not from the beings in The Abyss.
Yeah me!!
I even knew the Abyss. But I was in court so was too late.
