Best Picture of 1977

Nominees:
Annie Hall
The Goodbye Girl
Julia
Star Wars
The Turning Point

Winner:
Annie Hall

Story: After breaking up with his girlfriend Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), neurotic comedian Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) goes on a stream of consciousness journey through his memories of their relationship, trying to find out what caused them to part ways. He often breaks the fourth wall, speaking to the camera, entering peoples' stories, and even using animation. Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Allen originally envisioned this movie as a murder mystery, and that's how it was shot, with a subplot about a romance. During editing, Allen realized that all the best footage was of the romance, so he reedited the film as a romantic comedy.

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Annie Hall? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

Okay, to start off with I would like to say that Woody Allen is an amazing movie maker and deserved the Oscar for this movie. That said, I am not really a Woody Allen fan. He is funny, but after a while he gets on my nerves.

Another thing about winning the Oscar is that you need staying power. Who can honestly say they can remember Julia, or The Turning Point? I have heard about The Goodbye Girl, but I couldn't tell you what it is about.

So, that leaves Star Wars, which I would have picked (No suprise, it's in My Top Ten Favorite Movies. Of course, I benefit from hindsight here, but Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon. People lined up around the block to watch this movie. A classic tale of good verus evil. It still is a great movie. May the Force be with you.

I can't stand Woody Allen and can't even begin to watch a movie that he's in. He gets on your nerves after awhile? He gets on my nerves as soon as I hear him speak. So, this means I've never seen Annie Hall. And, I can barely watch Diane Keaton. She's got a strange way about her but I'll at least sit through a movie she's in.

Considering that Oscars usually go to those films with more acting and drama the pick for 77 would probably happen again today over a blockbuster like Star Wars (is that why it's called a blockbuster? because people are lined up around the block? hehe). As for The Goodbye Girl, I really like Richard Dreyfuss so I would have picked this one over Annie Hall.

See, I had no idea Richard Dreyfuss was in the Goodbye Girl. So I looked it up on IMDb.com. Okay, I remember watching parts of this on TV. As you can see, it didn't make an impression on me. So I went ahead and looked up Julia and The Turning Point. Nothing. I see Jane Fonda was in Julia and Shirley MacLaine was in The Turning Point. Still nothing.

The Academy does tend to go for non-blockbusters, or politically trendy movies, which is why I think Brokeback Mountain will probably win this year. It doesn't appeal much to me, but the Hollywood types loves it.

I also like your description of Diane Keaton. It is straight out of a 1930's horror film. "Stay away from her, Charlie, she's got a strange way about her." (eerie music plays in the background)

I would have taken the Goodbye Girl and I am a Star Wars fan. The Goodbye Girl has so many great things. They recently remade it with the lady for Everyone Loves Raymond and I can't remember the guy. They used almost the entire same script and action and everything but it was just not the same without Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason. You got to watch it sometime Will
