Best Picture of 1985

Nominees:
The Color Purple
Kiss of the Spider Woman
Out Of Africa
Prizzi’s Honor
Witness

Winner:
Out Of Africa

Story: Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), a Danish woman, marries a friend for the title of Baroness and they move to Africa and start a coffee plantation. Things unfold when her husband begins cheating on her and is away on business often, so she's at home alone, working on the farm and bonding with two men she met in her first day in Africa. She eventually falls in love with the one, Denys Finch-Hatton (Robert Redford) and goes on safari and whatnot with him. Later, she begins to want more from him than the simple friendship/relationship they have and pushes marriage, but Denys still wants his freedom. Hilarity ensues. By the end, she's gained a much better understanding and respect for the African culture than when she came.

Trivia: Even though the movie was shot on location in Africa, the production had to import trained lions from California, as local laws prohibited the use of wild animals in film.

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Out Of Africa? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

Out Of Africa was a sweeping epic with beautiful african vistas. But to me it was a little slow. Meryl Streeps' monotonous accented narration, although very poetic, was putting me to sleep.

As you know, from my trivia question yesterday, The Color Puprle was nominated for 11 Oscars, but didn't win any. I can't say I have seen all of the Color Purple, but I have seen some of it. It was pretty good.

Kiss of the Spider Woman is not a superhero movie, really, I'm not making this up. It is about two men in a South American prison, one is homosexual, the other is a political prisoner. They end up with mutual respect for each other. Come on! It's a movie, did you expect anything else?

Prizzi's Honor stars Jack Nicholson (well, we just lost Dad) and Kathleen Turner as two assasins by day, lovers by night, until they are assigned to kill each other. Wow, cool movie concept, they should remake this with somebody like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as the assasins, and they can be married but not know that they are assasins and go by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, that would be so cool...you mean they already did that?

Witness, an Amish boy witnesses a murder. Harrison Ford, good cop, ends up protecting him and having to fit into the Amish community to do it to save him from bad cops.

Although it was slow, Out Of Africa would have to get my vote because of the beautiful scenery.

What's with the Dutch DVD Cover?

I was wondering if anyone would notice that. It was a surprise to me too. I downloaded it off amazon.com so I didn't pay attention. Then I posted it and then it caught my eye.

I kinda like Jenseits von Afrika.

I liked Witness, although I don't think I've seen it in *gasp* twenty years.

Oh my, Mick....are you getting old or what? LOL

I loved Out of Africa but what chickypoo wouldn't with sweeping cinematography, Robert Redford and cheesy love story. And, we all know that Meryl is my favorite actress. But, I didn't realize that The Color Purple was this same year. Now that I think about it, it was probably a tough choice between these two movies. I read The Color Purple also. It's just as sad and painful as the movie and... hilarity ensues. (I laugh every time I see Will puts that in his comments)
