Best Picture of 1988

Nominees:
The Accidental Tourist
Dangerous Liaisons
Mississippi Burning
Rain Man
Working Girl

Winner:
Rain Man

Story: Charley (Tom Cruise) is a hustler. He has been on his own long enough to know how to work people and situations. He finds that the father who threw him out as a teenager has died. He left Charley with a now antique convertible and something more important, a previously unknown brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Raymond is Autistic, but is able to calculate complicated mathematical problems in his head with great speed and accuracy. Their father has left his fortune to Raymond who doesn't even understand what money is for. Charley is enraged by what has happened and by his father keeping Raymond's existence from him for his entire life. He kidnaps Raymond from his residential home but then finds that Raymond will only fly Qantas. The two begin a long road trip that will lead them to an understanding of each other. Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: The scene in the airport was cut by most airlines on their plane trips... except Qantas. They even promoted one of the movie's writers to first class once when he traveled on their airline.

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Rain Man? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

"Three minutes to Wapner." I wonder if audiences 50 years from now will know who Judge Wapner was? This is definitely the best picture of the year, definitely. Justin Hoffman's portrayal of autistic Rayman Babbitt was masterful. And Tom Cruise was pretty good, too.

The Accidental Tourist - A guy walks along and trips and falls onto a plane, by the time he gets up the plane has taken off and is headed to Paris. Okay, maybe not, actually, it's about a writer whose son has died and wife has left, who finds love with another woman, until his wife comes back. He then has to deal with many decisions.

Dangerous Liaisons - set in ancient France (okay, only 18th century France) it is a movie about manipulating people for your own purposes and the consequences of it.

Mississippi Burning - Two FBI agents with wildly different styles arrive in Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of three civil rights activists.

Working Girl - When a secretary's idea is stolen by her boss, she seizes an opportunity to steal it back by pretending she has her boss's job.

By the way, I went to see Capote last night and is it just me, or is it the material. I was, again, the youngest person in the room. Maybe it is the fact that I am going to see it on a weeknight.

Oh well, be sure to check in tomorrow for the Best Picture of 1988.

Something went screwy yesterday and Mick and Kim's comments did not show up here, although I got them by email. I also posted Driving Miss Daisy and came back two hours later and it was gone, so I had to repost it too. So I am reposting thier comments so everyone can see. Thanks

Mick wrote: wow, working girl was nominated for best picture? Now it's one of those movies you constantly see on basic cabel, along with overboard and legally blonde.

and Kim wrote: This year was a hard year to decide for me. I really liked Rainman, The Accidental Tourist and Dangerous Liasons. I guess for Best picture though Rainman was a good winner though Tom Cruise is a complete overactor (as always, which made him and Nicole Kidman a good match. They must have taken lessons from the same teacher). Dustin Hoffman did a fantastic job with his part.
