Dances With Wolves
Ghost
The Godfather, Part III
Good Fellas
Winner:
Dances With Wolves
Story: Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is dubbed a hero after he accidentally leads Union troops to a victory during the Civil War. He requests a position on the western frontier, but finds it deserted. He soon finds out he is not alone, but meets a wolf he dubs "Two-socks" and a curious Indian tribe. Dunbar quickly makes friends with the tribe, and discovers a white woman who was raised by the Indians. He gradually earns the respect of these native people, and sheds his white-man's ways. Hilarity ensues.
Trivia: To add realism to the movie, a language coach was brought in to teach Lakota to cast members who did not know how to speak it. Because of the difficulty in learning the language, the "gendered speech" aspects of the language were omitted from the lessons. When native speakers of Lakota saw the finished film, they found it amusing to hear Lakota warriors talking like women.
So, tell me what you think? Did you like Dances With Wolves? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

Ah Yeah, the 90's. Now that is what I'm talkin' about. This is the first year that I have seen four out of the five movies. That happened three times in the 90's.
Dances With Wolves, The best Kevin Costner movie ever, which isn't saying much, but hey, there was Field of Dreams and Bull Durham so it ain't all bad. This is absolutely the best picture of the year, hands down, no contest, except I could have lived without having to see Costner's backside.
Awakenings - The victims of an encephalitis epidemic many years ago have been catatonic ever since, but now a new drug offers the prospect of reviving them. Robin Williams in one of his first 'serious' roles was very good as Dr. Sayer. De Niro as the first patient to respond was pretty good too.
Ghost - After being killed during a botched mugging, a man's love for his partner enables him to remain on earth as a ghost. Whoopi's Oscar winner (She won for this and not for The Color Purple? Oh those crazy Academy voters). This movie has one of the cheesiest lines in movie history. "I love you." "Ditto"
The Godfather, Part III - All I know is that this one wasn't as good as the first two, but hey, the first two won the best picture, that's a lot to live up to. (by the way, this is the first series to get all three movies nominated for Best Picture, the only other series to do it, The Lord of the Rings)
Good Fellas - The story of Irish-Italian American, Henry Hill, and how he lives day-to-day life as a member of the Mafia. Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta were greta. I haven't seen this movie in ages so I don't remember most of it.
Why shouldn't Lakotas talk like women? They were the original boys named Sioux.
Dances with Wolves is another one my favorite movies and I'll watch it again and again. "Tatonka" (with hands pointing like horns up on your head). Too bad Awakenings was nominated this year with Dances With Wolves because Awakenings was an excellent movie. I think Awakenings had the better acting though. Dances was just a beautifully made movie. And, I'm not that big a fan of mafia movies, and two in this year...mamma mia.
