Best Picture of 1997

Nominees:
As Good As It Gets

The Full Monty
Good Will Hunting
L.A. Confidential
Titanic

Winner:
Titanic

Story: Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) is a treasure hunter looking for a famous diamond among the debris of the Titanic. He finds a sketch in a safebox in which a young woman is wearing the diamond on a necklace. After showing the drawing on a TV program, Rose Dawson (Kate Winslet/Gloria Stuart), an old lady comes forward claiming to be the woman in the drawing. She is brought to the explorer's vessel to help them determine the location of the diamond, but instead she tells everyone the "real" story of Titanic's sinking. She was a 17 year-old rich girl sailing to the USA to get married with Cal Hockley. Her mother was forcing her to get married so she felt trapped inside her own world. During the trip she tries to commit suicide and she is saved by Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a third-class passenger who travels around making pencil drawings. They get to know each other better until they fall in love. Hockley and Rose's mother try to separate them several times...hilarity ensues

Spoiler Warning (Plot and/or ending details follow):
Amidst all this confusion the Titanic hits an iceberg and sinks.

Trivia: Jack's sketch of Rose wearing the necklace was drawn by director James Cameron; it's his hands we see drawing the picture. Cameron also drew all the other pictures in Jack's sketchbook.

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Titanic? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

I hope I didn't spoil it for you by revealing the ending. What can I say about Titanic? Highest grossing movie of all time (unadjusted for inflation)is what I can say. Titanic was a happening in 1997. It said in the top ten box office for like six or seven months. Did anyone think this movie wouldn't win?

This is the third time I have seen four out of five of the nominees (all except the Full Monty).

Speaking of which - The Full Monty - Six unemployed steel workers form a male striptease act. The women cheer them on to go for "the full monty" - total nudity.

As Good As It Gets - A single mother/waitress, a misanthropic author, and a gay artist form an unlikely friendship. This title could have been As Good As It Gets Without Winning Best Picture. It took the top two Oscars for Acting (Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt).

Good Will Hunting - Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT, has a gift for mathematics which is discovered, and a psychologist tries to help him with his gift and the rest of his life. How can you not love a movie where the main character is not only named Will, but is also the smartest guy in the room...or is it just me? Can you believe Matt Damon and Ben Affleck wrote this movie?

L.A. Confidential - A shooting at an all night diner is investigated by three LA policemen in their own unique ways. Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito, David Strathhaim, Should I continue?

So my pick this year would be...oh who am I kidding...Titanic blew everything away. I'm surprised that they haven't found a way to make a sequel.

What could be the segual, a new ship named Titanic II and it goes down in the same place and they decide it really was some underwater monster that took the first one down.

hey I saw all five movies that year! That might be the first and only time I could say that. You didn't miss anything by not seeing The Full Monty.

i think i might have to go with "as good as it gets." for all of nicholson's craziness, it's a really touching film.

anonymous debby can't ever remember greg kinnear's name, but, since this movie, always refers to him as "verdell's daddy."

I don't think any of the other movies had a chance against Titanic. All the hpye is what did it. Lots of money, lots of interest and lots of votes.

I did see The Full Monty and I enjoyed it. Then again, I am a whoooman and I can understand if you men don't want to see other men getting naked. There was only a brief looksy at the very end of the movie anyways, so it was tastefully done in my opinion. It's about six goobers who have no life and they find their inner sex appeal and self confidence by doing a strip tease and finally going the full monty. Hilarity really does ensue.
