170 years ago today the defenders of the Alamo fell to General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and a Mexican army that some estimate outnumbered the 200 Texan defenders by 20 to 1. The Texan defenders were able to hold off the Mexican advance for 13 days.
A legend exists that on March 3rd, 4th, and 5th, Lt. Col. William Barrett Travis drew a line in the sand with his sword and invited all those who were willing to stay, and presumably to die, to cross over the line. Every man, save one, crossed over the line. Allegedly, the invalid Col. James Bowie was carried across the line at his request. The phrase "drawing a line in the sand" has remained part of English jargon for taking a stand with no compromise.

"Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad"!!!! I loved the last line of the sound clip The Fall of the Alamo. "Santa Anna was captured, Texas was free, and a new republic was born."
Living in other places in the country (and the world), I know how proud Texans really are. No one else in the USA can say they came from a state that was once it's own country. I try to explain to people the significance of San Jacinto and the Alamo, Sam Houston and Travis. They just don't get it.
I'm so happy that I've gotten to know other places, other states, other countries. But....my heart is forever planted in Texas. Everyone we've met in our travels and who know us even just slightly know that we'll be back once this Navy thing is done and over. It's just a matter of time. It's so ingrained in our family that Brad tells people he's from Texas. Gotta love it. We tell people he was born in Virginia, but he's a Texan through and through.
