Top 250 Challenge: 145

Ed Wood (1994)
Number 187 on IMDb's Top 250
Nominated by Anonymous Ken

Edward D. Wood, Jr. famous director, or should I say infamous director. Ed Wood (Johnny Depp) is considered by many as the "Worst Director Of All Time," and is best known for his B-Movies. This movie concentrates on the best-known period of his life in the 1950s, when he made Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster and what has been voted as the "Worst Movie Of All Time," Plan 9 From Outer Space. The movie focusing on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau). Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Tim Burton said that he was drawn to the story because of the similarities between Ed Wood's relationship with Bela Lugosi and his own friendship with Vincent Price late in the actor's life. One story claims that the decision to film in black and white was made because no one could decide how Bela Lugosi should look filmed in color. This film cost more to produce than all of Ed Wood's films put together.

Once again Johnny Depp plays a quirky character to hilarious extremes. Martin Landau just blows everyone away with his Lugosi and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Ironically, the man Landau play, Bela Lugosi, was never even nominated for an Oscar. Thanks Ken.
