Top 250 Challenge: 195

Oldboy (2003)
Number 119 on IMDb's Top 250

An average man is kidnapped and imprisoned in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. He then is released, equipped with money, a cellphone and expensive clothes. As he strives to explain his imprisonment and get his revenge, he soon finds out that not only his kidnapper has still plans for him, but that those plans will serve as an even worse finale to 15 years of imprisonment. Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Four live octopi were eaten for the scene with Dae-su in the sushi bar, a scene which provoked some controversy abroad. Eating live octopus in Korea is commonplace although it is usually sliced first. When the film won the Grand Prix at Cannes, the director thanked the octopi along with the cast and crew. The famous one-take corridor scene was shot in three days. CGI was not used to cleverly edit the sequence as one take, it was actually done in one take. The only CGI used during the scene is where Oh Dae Su gets stabbed in the back with a knife.

This was a pychological thriller and really plays around with the minds of the characters. It is really a very intricate revenge scheme that ends up destroying two families and all because one man "talks too much."
