Kaneda is a bike gang leader in Neo Tokyo whose close friend Tetsuo gets involved in a secret government project known as Akira. On his way to save Tetsuo, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists, three oddly strange children with amazing powers, and a powerful military leader. The confrontation sparks off Tetsuo's supernatural power leading to bloody death, a coup attempt and the final battle in the Tokyo Olympiad where Akira's secrets were buried 30 years ago. Hilarity ensues.
Trivia: This was one of the first Japanese anime films to have the character's voices recorded before they were animated. While this is the typical practice in U.S. animation, in Japan the animation is generally produced first. The production budget was nearly $10 million, a record sum in Japanese animation film. The movie consists of 2,212 shots and 160,000 single pictures, 2-3 times more than usual, using 327 different colors (another record in animation film), 50 of which were exclusively created for the film. The reason for this statistic is that most of the movie takes place at night, a setting that is traditionally avoided by animators because of the increased color requirements. The 1940s-style song heard following the terrorist bombing is "Tokyo Shoe Shine Boy", released in 1951 by jazz singer Teruko Akatsuki. The song was not included in either the Japanese, or American releases of the Akira soundtrack; however, it had previously appeared on the release of the soundtrack from M*A*S*H (1970).
This is actually a very beautiful film to watch. I liked the character development in this one. You don't usually get a lot of character development in animated movies. One thing though, there are three characters in the movie, three children/adults, well, its kind of hard to explain without watching the movie. These three were children 30 years before and were part of a scientific experiment that also produced Akira who was responsible for World War 3 and the destruction of old Tokyo. Well these three kids with incredible powers did not grew up, they grew old but didn't grow up if that makes any sense. Okay, anyway, the reason I am talking about them has nothing to do with the movie, but you had to a have a little perspective. Anyway, one of the children looks just like Louie Anderson, and that is pretty much all I have to say.
Next Up: The "B" Movie. Time to switch gears, BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB. I am aiming for posting the Alphabet Project every Wednesday, so you have until then to try to guess what movie I will be watching for "B". I really have liked your guesses for the "A" movie. Keep it up! Here are the guesses:
Aguirre: the Wrath of God, In the 16th century, the ruthless and insane Aguirre leads a Spanish expedition in search of El Dorado.
Adaptation, A lovelorn screenwriter turns to his less talented twin brother for help when his efforts to adapt a non-fiction book go nowhere.
The AristoCats, Upon Madame Adelaide Bonfamille's passing her cat Duchess and 3 kittens stand to inherit her fortune. But not if Edgar the butler can help it.
Albino Alligator, Three petty thieves are chased by the police who believe that the three are really major criminals.
Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love.
The Alphabet Murders, The Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (Tony Randall?) investigates a series of murders in London in which the victims are killed according to their initials.
Albino Aliens from Alpha Centauri, All the President's Yes Men, Another Day, Another Donut - Anonymous Ken Stikes Again, now that would be a funny movie. Of course, I would so watch Albino Aliens From Alpha Centauri.

well, as you predicted, i never would have guessed "akira" in a billion or so years.
i'll have to try extra hard for the b movie.
bedtime for bonzo?
bob, what about?
beyond thunderdome?
big lebowski, the?
Okay, let's see here.
Bedtime for Bonzo, nope sorry.
What About Bob? is not a "B" movie, your stretching.
Same thing for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (I am using the offical titles according to IMDb)
As for The Big Lebowski, seen it, its part of the Top 250.
Keep trying.
I would have never guessed your A movie either. But...it's way fun trying to guess.
So here's my B suggestions/guesses
Below - oh wait, you don't like horror flicks.
Bandits - I don't know why I picked this one. Looks like something you'd enjoy.
Because of Winn-Dixie - you've probably already seen it, but I had to say that I LOVE Dave Matthews.
Big Fish - again, you've probably seen it but it doesn't hurt to try.
Below - Wow, I have never even heard of this one.
Bandits - Well, I haven't seen it yet so it is a good guess, but wrong.
Because of Winn-Dixie - Dave Matthews was in that?
Big Fish - I have seen this one, this isn't it.
Very good guesses. Keep 'em coming.
Yes, Dave Matthews was in Because of Winn-Dixie. He was the pet shop owner. He sang to calm the animals. Have I said that I LOVE Dave Matthews?

Barbarrela
Well there are 10 choices for you.
Welcome Back, Impman! I hope your trip was okay.
This is great, eighteen movies so far!
Bright Eyes - haven't seen it, but this isn't the one.
Blue Brothers - What kind of movie fan would I be if I hadn't seen this movie.
Blade - Great vampire action movie, not the one.
Basket Case - never heard of it, or it doesn't ring a bell, I don't recognise it, youe making me nervious, I'm turning into a basket case here...:-)
B - simple title, easy to remember, not the one.
Back to the Future - see Blues Brothers
Bewitched - Although I share a name with Will Ferrel, I'm not really a fan, the only movies I have seen with him in it were the Austin Powers movies.
Bebknobs and Broomsticks - Great Disney fare with the Murder She Wrote lady in it.
Blood Brothers - nope, sorry.
Barbarrela - A "B" movie and a b movie, Jane. Fonda. Best Performance. Ever.

(Man these posts are going to be huge when I add all of these guesses in at the bottom.)
OK here are some more
Bambi
The Brood
Bloodhounds of Broadway

Blazing saddles
Some good choices there.
Bambi - I have seen it. Classic
The Brood - Check check on IMDb... sounds... um... interesting.
Bloodhounds of Broadway - Madonna played a character named Hortense?
Blazing Saddles - One of Mel Brooks' best genre parodies, but I have already seen it, so nope.

Billy Liar
Going for the more feminine side there!
Bridges of Madisson County - nope
Beaches - ummm...nope
Beau Geste - never even heard of it.
Billy Liar - Lies!
Keep trying - your still pretty far off.
This is getting frustratingly fun, if you know what I mean. There must be thousands of B films out there, can't you give us any clues like the genre it belongs in???
That's what makes it so fun, seeing what y'all come up with. The goal s not to figure it out, per se, but to have fun with movies. So I'm not goning to give you slam dunk clues.
IMDb list's it as a Horror, Drama, Mystery, Thriller.
Does that help? ;-) Just think 24 more movies to go.
Okay just a few facts in general about the movies I will be watching, Although they span all the way back to the 20's the majority of them (20) were made after I was born. (Impman, that means after 1970). There are no more foreign language films (Akira was originally Japanese). I have not seen these movies prior to watching them for this project, so no Top 250, no Oscar Best Pictures, no movies previously post on in this blog. Hope that helps a little.
Blair witch project comes to mind,
Good grief Will, you're only 36! You have a lot to catch up with.
LOL ;)
Nope the Blair Witch it is not.
I turned 36 earlier this month.
