Top 250

The Departed (2006)
Number 161 on IMDb's Top 250

The Departed is set in South Boston, where the state police force is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello. While Billy quickly gains Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan, a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informer for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself. But is either willing to turn on the friends and comrades they've made during their long stints undercover? Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Martin Scorsese wanted to shoot the film in Boston, where the story is set. But due to concerns on setting up production and politics, the producers chose New York City to double for Boston because of the state's 15% tax credit. The bulk of the movie was shot in New York City while a six week shooting schedule was split in two for Boston, shooting the first half in June and the second half in August. The film's technical advisor was Tom Duffy, a retired detective who worked out of Boston for nearly thirty years and specialized in organized crime. He was particularly involved in the case against notorious South Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, whom Jack Nicolson's Frank Costello is partly based on.

Oh my God! This was by far the best movie I have seen this year! Listen to this pedigree. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and Martin Scorsese. This is definitely the absolute best role I have ever seen DiCaprio in. Damon also held his own, but Jack Nicholson stole the show as the slightly crazy crime boss. The last 20 minutes are amazing but the last 5 will blow your mind. A must see!

Not neccessarily. We'll probably see it in our theater in a month or so. We get the big blockbusters the same week as the states, but most movies go through the theaters there then get distributed here. Unless I want to go out into town to see the movie, then I'll have to watch it dubbed in Italian. I think I'll just wait for it to open in my little theater.
