The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

The story tells the professional adventure of Andrea (Anne Hathaway), whose greatest dream is to become a journalist. Andy gets a job in the fashion industry through Runway magazine, the most famous of its type, to make ends meet. But Andy won't develop her writing skills in the magazine, she will develop her talents as the editor in chief Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep)'s assistant. The problem is that Miranda is a merciless, posh and cruel woman, making the experience a living hell for Andy. The environment in the place will be cold and extremely critical with the physical appearance. Andy will have to change her simple and plain style, for a more trendy and elegant one, in order to gain the acceptance of her ruthless boss and colleagues, specially Emily, her unpleasant workmate. Hilarity will ensue. Despite everything against Andy in the office, she will consider the experience as a challenge, drastically changing her clothes and self-image, with the help of Nigel, the magazine's art director. Nevertheless, the job becomes extremely demanding, because of Miranda's tough work rhythm and nearly impossible tasks, leaving Andy without a private life with her boyfriend, family and friends. Is the old Andy gone, is she more preoccupied about her image and her future in the magazine?

Trivia: Anne Hathaway is the daughter of Jane Hathaway. Jane Hathaway is better known as the secretary for Mr. Drysdale on the Beverly Hillbillies. The book that Miranda asks Andy to retrieve for her twin daughters is Harry Potter Book 7 and is an impossible task to hunt down as it has not yet been written. One of the prop books used in the movie sold in an online auction for $586.00 and proceeds went to Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that assists more than 45,000 disadvantaged women each year as they transition into the workforce. A 'Runway' issue is displayed behind Emily's desk, next to the fax machine. It features a cover with three models. It is based on the real cover of VOGUE August 2004 issue, featuring Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keogh. Despite the title of the film, and the high fashion couture name-dropping, the name Prada is seen only once in the course of the film, on Miranda's bag, when she first time appears on the screen going from her car to the entrance of the building. The newspaper that hires Andy is the New York Mirror. The Mirror was a real newspaper that ended in 1898, and often published first editions of Edgar Allen Poe. Okay, so Anne Hathaway is not the daughter of Jane Hathaway, but I had you thinking about it for a minute, right?

As Kim said, I was expecting a chick flick and in a sense, it was, but it was more then that. This was a good movie that downplayed the movie cliches you would expect from a project like this. Andy is fashion challenged at the first of the movie, but in no way is she ugly or frumpy or wearing glasses that she takes off and is automatically beautiful, none of that is present. Oh yeah, and this just in, Meryl Streep is pretty good. She could have acted a lot of different ways to show that she is the evil, demanding boss, but she didn't act crazy or anything like that. She was calm, collected, and she used a low, slow, precise, soft voice. It really made you have to concentrate on listening to her, so you started to get the same, slightly nervous feelings that her employees get when they are with her. Thanks Kim, It was good.
