Best Picture of 2003

Nominees:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Lost In Translation
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

Winner:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Story: The Fellowship divides to conquer as Frodo and Sam, with the help and hindrance of Gollum, continue their way to Mount Doom. Gandalf and Pippin ride to Minas Tirith to help defend Gondor while Merry remains with Eowyn and the other Rohan fighters. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli seek aid from those that live in the Cursed Mountains. All these battles have one goal in mind: distract the Eye of Sauron and buy Frodo a little more time to destroy the ring. Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Return of the King tied with Ben-Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997) to win the most Oscars (11) in a single year. With 35 letters and one punctuation mark, Return of the King has the longest title of any Best Picture Oscar Winner.

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Return of the King? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

Peter Jackson finally gets his due. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is the best movie trilogy ever made, hands down. The Godfather series won two Best Pictures, but the third one wasn't near as good. The Star Wars series (thre first three, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) was close.

Lost In Translation - A movie star with a sense of emptiness, and a neglected newlywed meet up as strangers in Tokyo and form an unlikely bond.

Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World - During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.

Mystic River - With a childhood tragedy that overshadowed their lives, three men are reunited by circumstance when one loses a daughter.

Seabiscuit - True story of the undersized Depression-era racehorse whose victories lifted not only the spirits of the team behind it but also those of the nation as well. Pretty cool movie.

Only saw LOTR III and Seabiscuit. Unfortunatley of Seabiscuit, LOTR was due.

I would probably like Mystic River but I hate Sean Penn and a movie about someone losing a small child hits a little too close to home to be enjoyable.

Even though I didn't see it, I really wanted Bill Murray to win best Actor that year. Did I mention I hate Sean Penn?

Actually Mick, in Mystic River, the child was 19 when she was killed. They only have flashbacks of when she was little. Even though I'm not a big Sean Penn fan myself, this movie was very good. You should see it.

Lost in Translation was a little weird and slow for me. It's strange seeing Bill Murray be series in a movie.

I'm embarrassed to say I fell asleep watching Seabiscuit so I can't really judge it.

And, LOTR, The Return of the King was absolutely fantastic. Not only was it well made and an all around good movie, but I got to go see it with my two favorite brothers. :o) It deserved the win.

Okay, then I might see Mystic River...in the previews I saw a little girl and it's hard to watch those kind of movies now.
