Trivia Tuesday: Hepburn and Tracy

They are one of Hollywood's most recognizable pairs both on screen and off, and have in large part become the standard by which other film romances are judged. Katherine Hepburn, with her agile mind and New England brogue, complemented Spencer Tracy's easy working-class strength. Tracy seemed to be the only one Hepburn would allow to tame her. Their meeting was the stuff of legends, Hepburn, who was wearing special heels that added several inches to her lanky frame, said, "I'm afraid I'm too tall for you, Mr. Tracy." Tracy's reply, "Don't worry, I'll soon cut you down to size." Their off screen romance was far more complicated then their on screen appearances because of Tracy's marriage. They remained devoted friends until Tracy's death in 1967.

How many movies did Tracy and Hepburn appear in together?

My guess is around 10 films together. I know of only one by name, Guess Whos Coming for Dinner. Then again I don't know the names of a lot of movies she did except for Bringing Up Baby and Little Women and in the later years Rooster Gogburn. But I know they made a lot of movies back then, so I'm going high with 10.

You are high, but very close. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner was their last film together. Tracy died shortly after filming it.

Tracy died 12 days after the film was completed. He had been sick for months and thought he would die before the film was finished. He was jubilant after his final scenes were shot. Funny how your web site educates me in film history and trivia. I believe they made 9 films together. Neither of them had worked for years before agreeing to make this film.
