Best Picture of 1979

Nominees:
All That Jazz
Apocalypse Now
Breaking Away
Kramer vs. Kramer
Norma Rae

Winner:
Kramer vs. Kramer

Story: Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) is a career man for whom his work comes before his family. His wife Joanna (Meryl Streep) cannot take this anymore, so she decides to leave him. Ted is now faced with the tasks of housekeeping and taking care of himself and their young son Billy. When he has learned to adjust his life to these new responsibilities, Joanna resurfaces and wants Billy back. Ted however refuses to give him up, so they go to court to fight for the custody of their son. Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Dustin Hoffman, having just lived through a divorce himself, contributed many personal moments and dialogue to the film and was offered shared screenplay credit by director Robert Benton, but turned it down.

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Kramer vs. Kramer? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

Okay, do you see a pattern here? The Oscars are seven weeks away and by the time they get there, you will have seen posts about the last 28 best picture Oscars (4 a week). And now, to the questions.

Of the last 28 best pictures, I have currently seen 21 of them (I am fixing this through netflix, btw, I have seen 37 out of 77). I tell you this because this movie is the first one on the list that I have not seen. I have only seen one of these movies (that's nothing, wait till 1980) and that movie is Apocalypse Now. This movie is about a journey a man takes into madness in Vietnam. Many people, including me, say that this movie is a lot better then the Deer Hunter and I think it suffered from the fact that The Deer Hunter won the year before. Needless to say, I would have picked this one.

All That Jazz has Roy Scheider in a story based on the life of Bob Fosse.
Breaking Away is about racing bikes a la Lance Armstrong way before Lance.
Norma Rae is about starting a union in a textile company with Sally Fields (I have seen parts of this movie, but never start to finish).

By The Way, this is the three straight movie nominated for best picture that Meryl Streep has been in. She made her movie debut in Julia in 1977 and she was in The Deer Hunter.

Hey, a year I've seen most of the films. I loved Kramer vs. Kramer and get a good cry everytime I see it (what's up with your hilarity ensues comment on every movie?) Another thing is I love, love, love Meryl Streep. Ever since I saw Sofies Choice, I've been enthralled with her acting. So, of course, I would pick Kramer vs. Kramer over the others in the list. Norma Rae would have come in a close second for me over Apocalypse Now.

By the way, who won for best acctress this year? Sally Fields?

Yes, Sally Field won the Oscar. I think this was the "You love me...you really really love me." moment.

Hilarity ensues is my signature. Every review I have had includes it.
