Best Picture of 1980

Nominees:
Coal Miner’s Daughter
The Elephant Man
Ordinary People
Raging Bull
Tess

Winner:
Ordinary People

Story: Beth (Mary Tyler Moore), Calvin (Donald Sutherland), and their son Conrad (Timothy Hutton) are living in the aftermath of the death of the other son. Conrad is overcome by grief and misplaced guilt to the extent of a suicide attempt. He is in therapy. Beth had always preferred his brother and is having difficulty being supportive to Conrad. Calvin is trapped between the two trying to hold the family together. Hilarity ensues.

Trivia: Gene Hackman was originally cast as Dr. Berger, but had to bow out. Judd Hirsch stepped in to fill the role, on condition that he could complete the filming of his scenes in eight days, so as not to interfere with his schedule on the TV show "Taxi" (1978).

So, tell me what you think? Did you like Ordinary People? Would you have picked another movie as Best Picture? Why?

Okay...um...uh...okay, so I have never seen any of these movies. I have seen parts or clips about some of them.

Coal Miner's Daughter is about Loretta Lynn.
The Elephant Man is about Joseph Merrick (called John in the movie).
Raging Bull is about Jake La Motta, the middle weight champ. I am not much of a fight fan, so fight movies don't appeal much to me. This is supposed to be the best fight movie ever made.
Tess is about former first lady Shirley MacLaine and secret service agent Nicolas cage. Its a funn...it's not about...? oh yeah, that was Guarding Tess, sorry.
And then there is Ordinary People.

Don't know what to tell ya.

I don't think I could tell ya either. I don't think I've seen any of these movies. But, I'm sure that in most of them: hilarity ensues.

I'm anticipating the years when I know the movies!
